New Energy Rating Label For Home Appliances.

Posted by Lorraine on 22nd Mar 2021

Have you found it confusing trying to choose the best energy efficient appliance for your home? From the 1st March 2021, you will start to see new energy labels on home appliances making the selection process easier for you.

Plus classes (A++, A+++) that we are familiar with at the moment, will be replaced with a simplified energy consumption scale rated from A - G. This will make the process of finding best eco friendly products so much easier.

The transition to new energy labels will be gradual. From March 2021, five categories of cooling and wet appliances will have the new energy ratings. These include fridges and freezers, wine coolers dishwashers, washing machines and washer-dryers. Remaining appliance categories will change from 2022.

Why Is A New Energy Label Needed?

Over recent years we have seen the desire for eco friendly products rise significantly. The home appliance market is no exception. More customers are looking for appliances that offer eco friendly cycles and efficient technology.

To keep up with customer expectations, energy saving technology has advanced which had led to better eco performances for many domestic appliances.

This means a lot of appliances now have an A+ energy rating or higher. The current energy rating scale needed to be reviewed as too many products were crowded at the top of the scale. This made shopping for the best product quite confusing.

A much broader and simplified energy performance scale has now been developed which will make it easier to compare efficiency between products.

Energy Efficiency For The Future.

It will be rare to find current appliances attaining a level A or B on the new scale. Experts have re-calculated the system to purposefully allow for higher performing appliances to be added at a later date; once they come to market, we’re talking future tech here! This means existing high performing appliances (rated A+++) will fall into a lower rating on the new scale.

According to Amdea statistics, many existing products will fall into the following categories on the new scale;

  • Washing machines - C or D
  • Dishwashers - E or F
  • Fridge Freezers - E or F

It’s worth remembering that models rated A++ and A+ on the scale we use at the moment are still highly efficient. For example, today's popular fridge freezer models consume 40% less energy* than the average model in homes a decade earlier and cost around £41 less a year to run. Even with these impressive statistics, such appliances will fall into E-F band on the new scale. * Sources: AMDEA, EST, BEIS

How Will The New Label Look?

To make buying and comparing even easier, the new labels give new information! The rainbow labels will make it much easier for you to find the most efficient model for your individual needs. Changes include;

  • EU flag will be replaced by the Union Jack.
  • QR Code - Scan with a smartphone to link to more product information.
  • Rainbow Scale - Simplified A-G classification system.
  • New ratings for noise from A-D.
  • Pictograms on the bottom of the label to clearly show product features. These include new ratings based on energy consumption per 100 cycles on washing machines and wine coolers will show you capacity in number of bottles.

The images below show you what you can expect to see on the labels. Information sourced from amdea.
