Energy Efficient Appliances 2024 - Advice On How To Reduce Energy Costs In The Kitchen.

Posted by Lorraine on 21st Feb 2024

Choosing energy saving appliances for the kitchen can be a daunting task. We’ve put together our top tips and advice on what features to look out for to make your search for a new appliance as easy as possible for you.

Appliances are the work horses of the kitchen. We rely on washing machines to do the laundry, dishwashers to clean the dishes and fridge freezers to keep our food fresh. These trustworthy appliances are, however, among the most expensive to run.  Energy-efficient performers will minimize environmental damage whilst saving you valuable money on your energy bills over time.

Read on to find out how to find the best energy efficient appliances for your kitchen and utility.

Dishwashers, Washing Machines & Tumble Dryers.

Intelligent Technology.

Many appliances now offer technology which automatically adjusts the settings during the cycle. Unique sensors monitor the load and automatically adjust the water pressure, temperature and time settings. This clever technology helps to save water and energy with outstanding end results.

A large number of modern, highly energy efficient appliances feature this technology, however you’ll find that each manufacturer will have chosen a name that is unique to their brand. For example, Whirlpool’s is found in their 6th Sense range.

A 6th Sense Power Clean Dishwasher from Whirlpool will reduce cycle times and energy consumption by up to 50% compared to regular dishwashers!

You’ll also find OptiSense Technology on AEG & Electrolux laundry appliances.Whirlpool 6th Sense Technology

Eco - Cycle

We highly recommend that you look for models that have environmentally friendly eco care cycles as they are uniquely designed to reduce electricity and water consumption resulting in lower running costs for you.

An eco cycle on a washing machine can be specifically programmed for cottons, synthetics and fast wash cycles and could help you save up to 70% in energy.

The energy efficient Caple WMi4001, Built In Washing Machine offers plenty of wash programmes including an Eco cycle which can be set between 40 to 60 degrees. A 24 hr delay timer means you have full control on when to start the washing too.

The Whirlpool BIWMWG91485UK operates quietly and features 6th Sense Technology. This washing machine monitors the load and cleverly adapts the cycle to help reduce running costs!

Delay Start

Many modern appliances feature a delay-start function which allows users to take full advantage of cheaper off-peak electricity tariffs.

With this function you can delay the start time for between 1-24 hours meaning you could be cleaning your dirty dishes whilst you sleep or programme your washing to be ready for when you get home!

Silent Technology

Old appliances are often noisy during operation so starting a cycle to run during the evening would be off limits, especially if you have young children trying to sleep in the house! With modern domestic appliances offering super silent technology it is now possible to run your dishwasher, tumble dryer or washing machine during the evening (off peak/cheaper periods) without being disturbed. Anything below 75dB is classed as quiet.

You’ll find noise reducing technology in many modern washing machines. Models that feature Quiet Technology create less vibration, lower spin speeds and more peace and quiet thanks to a high-performance traction motor that directly rotates the drum.

Half Load - Dishwashers

Choosing a dishwasher with a half load function is ideal for when you don’t have a full load but simply cannot wait. The programme time is reduced and up to 30% less water is used which is not only good for the environment but it will save you money too

The iivela IVDW600 Integrated Dishwasher boasts an impressive A++ energy rating and has an array of special features including eco friendly cycles. It also has a half load option, delay start function and quiet operation should you wish to operate during the cheaper late night tariffs. The IVDW600 is extremely competitive in price as well as energy efficient, which is a win all round!

Our very popular Whirlpool, W8IHP42LUK, Integrated Dishwasher with silent function features 6th Sense Technology and NaturalDry Technology for sparkling clean glasses, crockery and cutlery. The door opens at the end of the cycle too, allowing the items to dry naturally.

Refrigeration.

Unlike your washing machine or dishwasher, your fridge freezer is on 24 hours a day, so it is especially important to do your research and opt for a highly efficient model. Many of the refrigerators in our collection offer an A+ (old rating) or higher energy rating. Our most energy efficient models minimise environmental damage and use up to 25% less energy than equivalent A-rated products.

It is worthwhile looking for models that feature special technology such as subtle reminders that the door has been left open or models that have a holiday mode, small but beneficial energy conserving features.

Eco/Holiday Mode.

Appliances with Eco/Holiday Mode means the fridge can be programmed to work in a power-saving mode. This is ideal for when you go away on holiday and you know the door will remain closed until you return home.

Audible Alarm.

Opt for a fridge freezer with an acoustic alarm as this will alert you if your fridge door has been left ajar and open for longer than necessary. If you leave your fridge freezer door open too long then the appliance needs to work harder to keep the contents cool resulting in a hike in your energy usage.

It’s also worth being extra vigilant with the storing of food;

  • The internal temperature in your fridge should be between 1 & 4°C. It is important to make sure it remains at an optimum temperature to keep your food fresh and running costs low.
  • Generally speaking, when your fridge is full your refrigerator will run more efficiently, so try to keep a well stocked fridge if you can!
  • Always wait until food has cooled before adding the items to your freezer. Adding warm items to the freezer will consume more energy as the machine will have to work harder to reach its optimum temperature.
  • Defrost food in the fridge. By placing frozen items in the fridge to gradually defrost it will cool the internal temperature so the appliance need not work as hard to stay chilled!

The stylish Caple RFF731 Free-Standing Fridge Freezer is designed with Caple Cool technology. It helps to keep food fresher for longer as the air is distributed evenly around the inside of the appliance. This energy efficient fridge freezer will also alert you if the inside reaches a high temperature. An audible alarm is triggered if the door is left open. In holiday mode this appliance will run as efficiently as possible whilst you're away from home. Another excellent alternative for those looking for a built in cooling appliance is the Caple RI7306 Frost Free Integrated Fridge Freezer.

If your budget and space allows, the Caple, CAFF42, American Style Fridge Freezer is an energy efficient fridge freezer that is perfect for large families. It also features Caple Cool multi air flow cooling system, a 'door open' alarm, humidity controlled drawers, an energy saving internal light and more!

Did you know, during March 2021 a new energy rating system was launched? The new system has been designed to make the process of finding best eco friendly products so much easier, it's explained in more detail here.

Ditch The Kettle To Save Time, Energy And Water.
