Two Super Easy Halloween Snacks - Roasted Squash Seeds & Cheesy Broomsticks!!

Posted by Lorraine on 29th Oct 2016

It is time to get a little creative and a teeny bit messy with our Roasted Squash Seed and Cheesy Witches Broomstick Recipes. My boys LOVE these and they are really, really simple to make and great as a little snack in the run up to Halloween.First up, Roasted Squash Seeds. Now, they are a little messy to start with but it's all good fun especially if you get the kids involved! Make sure any participants are wearing aprons so you don't get splatted with pumpkin slop. With the aprons on, the roasting (and giggling) can commence! Let the little ones get their hands dirty by pulling out all the pumpkin innards then they'll need to wash the seeds so they are nice and clean and finally a careful pat with a tea towel to dry them. The children could even choose their own toppings for the seeds too, we have a few ideas below for sweet and savoury options. They may be small but did you know that pumpkin and squash seeds are nutritional powerhouses. They are high in protein, zinc, magnesium, copper and iron. They are also a good source of Vitamin E and K too, a great healthy option for all the family. Pumpkin and squash seeds contain L-tryptophan which helps with the production of melatonin and serotonin which encourage a good night’s sleep. So, for all the sleep deprived parents out there, why not try serving pumpkin seeds for supper tonight?!Roasted Pumpkin Squash SeedsNow for a little snack that is super easy to make; Cheesy Witches Broomsticks. Simply comprising of super fine breadsticks (or pretzel sticks if you can find them in the supermarket....we couldn't despite trying all the supermarkets in the area) a few cheese strings and a little fresh chive for decorative purposes. These little cheesy broomsticks are great for serving with soups, especially our Roasted Squash and Coconut Soup, salads or as an afternoon snack with some roasted squash seeds on the side.Makes 6 BroomsticksIngredients;3 Super Fine Breadsticks (halved) or 6 Pretzel sticks3 Cheese Strings6 lengths of fresh chivesMethod;cheesy-witches-broomsticks
  1. Cut the fine breadstick in half, set aside. If using Pretzels leave them whole.
  2. Slice the cheese strings into 3 equal pieces, approx 4cm in length.
  3. Pull one end of the cheese string to create the stringy effect, pull half way down only.
  4. Using a sharp knife cut a small round out of the other solid end of the cheese string.
  5. Very gently push the breadstick into the cut out, use the broken end so you have a nice finish to the end of your broomstick - if the breadsticks are too wide it will split the cheese so it is really important that you buy extra fine breadsticks.
  6. Wrap the chive around the bottom of the cheese on the broomstick and tie in a loose knot.
  7. Enjoy whilst making spooky witchy cackling noises!
