Why not try these fun, gruesome treats for Halloween?  They’re simple to make, so if you have small children you can get them involved. Marshmallow spiders You will need: 6 marshmallow teacakes
  • 6 digestive biscuits
  • 12 strips of liquorice
  • White icing
  • Smarties
Place a large marshmallow teacake on a digestive biscuit and secure with a little icing. This is the body of your spider.
  1. Next make the legs by cutting your liquorice into short, then strips and attaching 3 on each side of the marshmallow teacake using a little icing.
  2. Finally, add a face using the white icing, adding Smarties for eyes.
Jelly Snake Pit Pots This is such a simple treat yet kids love it, especially if you let them rescue the snakes from the pit with their fingers! You will need:
  • Snake-shaped jelly sweets - you can find these in most supermarkets
  • Jelly, ideally a different colour to the sweets
  • 6 plastic cups
  1. Place the snake sweets at the bottom of each plastic cup.
  2. Follow the packet instructions to make enough jelly to fill the cups.
Tombstone biscuits This basic biscuit mixture can be made into tombstone shapes – if you make them thick enough you should be able to make them stand up among jelly ‘grass’ on a serving platter for an extra spooky dish!   For 10 – 12 thick biscuits, you will need:
  • 250g butter
  • 140g caster sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 300g plain flour
  • 2 tsp vanilla essence
  • White icing
  • Jelly for serving (optional)
  1. To make the biscuits, simply combine the butter and sugar, then add the egg yolk. Next add the vanilla essence and then carefully combine the flour to make a dough.
  2. Roll out on a lightly floured surface – keep the dough quite thick - and cut into rectangles. You can use a knife to add shape to the top of each tombstone biscuit.
  3. Bake in the oven at 180°C (160°C fan/gas 4) for about 12 – 14 minutes, though keep an eye on them as the time will vary depending on how thick they are. When they’re nicely golden, remove from the oven and place on a cooling rack.
  4. Once the biscuits are cool you can decorate with ‘RIP’ in white icing. Serve as they are or place among a base of jelly ‘grass’ on a serving platter.
