How to clean your oven naturally

Posted by Alistair Ward on 17th May 2016

Nobody likes cleaning, least of all the oven.  For many of us, it’s a chore we put off until the grease and grime has built up, unfortunately making it an even less pleasant task. One of the off-putting things about cleaning the oven is the thought of using toxic chemicals.  However, in this article we show you that it is possible to clean your oven naturally – you don’t need to use nasty chemicals to remove even the most stubborn food remnants.Natural oven cleanersYou don’t need to buy expensive cleaning products to get your oven spick and span.  Here are a couple of well-known methods which are highly effective and extremely cheap.Method 1: Lemon juice and elbow greaseYou’ll need:• 2 lemons• A baking dish• Scourer and cleaning clothSimply halve the lemons and squeeze the juice into the baking dish along with the remnants of the lemons.  Add water to cover about a third of the height of the dish and place it in the oven at 250°C for about 30 minutes, longer if your oven is particularly dirty.Remove the dish, let your oven cool down and then set to work with a scourer to scrub away the grease and grime.  Finish off by wiping with a clean, damp cloth.Method 2: Vinegar & baking sodaYou’ll need:• A bottle of vinegar• A small tub of baking sodaThis method works best if you dispense the vinegar into a spray container.  Simply spray the vinegar around the oven and then sprinkle the surface area with baking soda (the mixture will fizz a little).  Leave to stand for 30 minutes to one hour and then use a scourer to scrub the oven clean.Finish off by wiping the oven with a clean, damp cloth. When cleaning your oven, even with natural products, it’s worth wearing cleaning gloves and an apron to protect your clothes.  It’s also a good idea to ensure you can open a window for ventilation. How to keep your oven cleanPrevention is always better than cure so take these simple steps to keep your oven clean.• Invest in a self-cleaning oven.• Buy some oven liners, like these from Caple.  Simply cut them to fit the base of your oven and replace when dirty.• Cover your food when it’s cooking to reduce splashes.• Wipe clean your oven and racks on a regular basis – don’t leave the mess to build up.
